My hallway has 5 recessed can lights each with a 75watt bulb operated on the same switch. I would like to install a 5-bulb halogen track light in the middle of the hallway to illuminate wall art. Can I remove the bulb and insert from the middle cannister fixture, cut the wires to the bulb receptacle and use the same wires to power up the track light. The track light with 5 bulbs will consume 150 watts through a low voltage transformer. Is this safe? The cannister light sticker says 75-watts maximum.

Without using more amps on the circuit, yes it's safe. You may even find a track fixture with a plate that will cover at least on of the can openings. Then buy caps for the others if your intent is to no longer use them.

Find the rafters/studs in the ceiling, to attach the track to. If the wiring is screwed to any of the can fixtures, you may not need to CUT at all, but certainly turn off that breaker for the process.

Convert Recessed Light To Track

The 75 watt maximum is listed for heat build up in the recessed fixture. If the track light is hooked up to the internal wiring of the recessed ,the opening of the recessed has to be covered with a metal plate so your electrical splice is closed off. Don't know how wide the opening is on your recessed ,but all track lighting plates that I have seen are about 4" X 4". This is just big enough to cover your standard electrical boxes. Any electrical splice has to be closed off so if there is sparking etc. it is contained. Hope this helps. Good luck

First, attempt making use of a distinct bulb to attempt. Take it from a fixture it truly is operating. i understand this sounds stupid, yet please attempt it. I have considered undesirable bulbs proper out of the field. I have also considered situations the position undesirable bulbs did not get thrown away and later were given jumbled jointly with new ones. do not positioned all of your faith interior the no-contact tester. certain, I do personal one too and they are in many circumstances accessible each so often. yet, they could lie (fantastically the less expensive ones frequently offered at DIY shops. there is not any replace for a multi-meter. once you've one, verify the means with it. verify both the nice and comfy-impartial and warm-floor. once you've little/no longer some thing warm-impartial yet have approx. 120v for warm-floor, then you extremely have a foul impartial connection (i think that this can be your situation.). The solutions about the operation of the thermal cutoff switches are in reality acceptable. even with the indisputable fact that, those are self-resetting. If this situation exists at the same time as the lighting fixtures fixtures are first grew to change into on (furnishings are nonetheless chilly), then the thermals are not any further the issue the following. As to insulation...some cans are rated for insulation contact (IC) some are not any further (non-IC). some are rated for IC, yet in reality with particular trims. there is in many circumstances a label on the contained in the can which will tell. If those lighting fixtures fixtures are all managed by making use of one swap and a number of them do artwork, look someplace as well the swap. verify connections interior the junction packing bins at each recessed can.
