Let greater number be x, then the other number will be x - 6.
x + (x - 6) = 86
2x - 6 = 86
2x = 92
x = 46

n = x+6
Your equation would be:
x + x + 2 = 86
which is:
2x + 6 = 86
2x +6 - 6 = 86 - 6
2x = 80
2x/2 = 80/2
x = 40
n = 40 + 6

Isaac is absolutely correct. Let's check his answer by plugging it back into the original word problem.
The two numbers given by Issac are: 46 and 40.
40 is 6 less than 46. <== good!
40 + 46 = 86 <== good!

-Seems as though you articulate as poorly as you do algebra.
Please stick to your own homework - maybe then you might get *ONE* best answer.)

well, just replace the variables such as this: x-6+n=86
77-6+15=86
x=77
n=15
also, issac, ur soooooooooooo wrong, u have to use the distributive property in ur way!! wow, ur so stupid that a 6th grader is smarter than u!

As you seem to have three different answers, I'll tell you this, "Listen to Isaac. The others don't know what they're talking about.
