Give William C. Davis' (Three Roads to the Alamo:
The Lives and Fortunes of David Crockett, James Bowie, and William Barret Travis) a read.

I think this book will give you the answers you seek.

Having grown up in Northeast Tennessee and very near to Crockett's birth place, his life has always held some fascination for me.
