Any of Cordwainer Smith's books, whether the wonderful "Norstrilia" or one of his compilations, "The Best of Cordwainer Smith" and "The Instrumentality of Mankind". If you read about this man it's incredible that he lived and wrote so long ago because of his subject matter, style and imagination. For "The Dead Lady of Clown Town" and "The Ballad of Lost C'Mell" alone, I have to recommend him.
Ursala K Le Guen's Left Hand of Darkness.
Of course I must mention each and every book by Tolkien, if you count each of the trilogy books as their own book. The multiple layers and subtext alone makes this a worthy work, and there is a reason Lord of the Rings is the second most read book in the world next only to the Bible. The book is so Rich in spirit and imagery that it brings tears to the eye and an ache to the heart. There is a kind of honesty to this work which works on the very heart of the reader. CS Lewis was right when he wrote of it, "Here are beauties which break the heart and burn like cold iron." Tolkien is, in the opinion of many people, the most important writer of the last century. His work has stood the test of time, and the fact that it is just as wonderful today as it was when it was written 50 plus years ago is testament to the power of this work.

A Tale of Two Cities for an Old Classic, it's not about 2 cities but about 2 men who are unrelated by blood, but are identical in physical features, and how one man will willingly die for another, and that there is no greater love for another human being.
When I was in Grade School all the way to High School, books by Author Lurlene McDaniel were outstanding and touching.
I love John Grisham and Robin Cooke for action, adventure, and just an all-around great story told with enough suspense to keep you wondering how it's all going to end and why it happened in the first place.

The Warriors Series by Erin Hunter is AWESOME!!! The first book, Into the Wild, and the last one, Twilight, are the best ones, but i wouldn't suggest reading Twilight before all the others (Into the Wild, Fire and Ice, Forest of Secrets, Rising Storm, A Dangerous Path, The Darkest Hour, Midnight, Moonrise, Dawn and Starlight).
