The tailpipe hits the body whenever I hit a bump in the road, yet my mechanic insists that the tailpipe is fine.

It may not be the tailpipe.check the rear swaybar endlinks, have done 4 or 5 of those. The exhaust usually isnt a problem unless there has been some type of damage to it.Rear shocks are starting to be more common too.

Be sure that you keep the shop slip that states that you complained about this problem. If the car goes out of warranty and your muffler hanger is broken, you can argue that you were complaining about this all along.

It might not be the tailpipe. I've learned NOT to be "too helpful" when I take a car in with a complaint. If you say, "There is a loud clunk when I go over bumps," you have not narrowed their focus. If you say, "My tailpipe knocks against the bottom of my car when I go over bumps," they will check your tailpipe and tell you it's fine, perhaps not suggesting other possible sources of the noise.

It probably is "fine", as in nothing is going to break. But if it annoys you you can get under the car and just wiggle the exhaust pipe. (Be sure to do it when pipe is not hot, and some kind of eye protection is a must when your face is below the exhaust system or else grit WILL get in your eyes.) It may Just be a matter of tightening something or adjusting/ adding a mount.
