There is a nice picture somewhere on the web that is a montage of many photos taken from orbit, and shows all the city lights throughout the world. It's a real eye-opener for where all the world's energy is going.

nope, you can see pretty much all lights from all major cities.
Oh, and in reference to the Great Wall of China being the only man made object seen from space. That's not exactly true, too many variables, depends on what orbit your in (low earth, mid earth, etc) and telescopic lenses these days make just about all man made object visable from space...

huge numbers of photos of Earth at night taken from various spacecraft orbiting the planet show pretty clearly that you can see a lot of light (cities, roads, etc.)
And by the way, you can also see a lot of buildings, bridges, etc. - not just the Great Wall of China, as some would have it.
