You wear it in your lash line or just above the upper/below the lower lashes.. Do not ring the area between your eye and your lashes or you will look like a raccoon as well as getting it in your eye. It doesn't really hurt, just annoying and you'll end up smearing any that was already applied all over the place trying to get the stuff out of your eye.
As far as how to keep it straight - it takes practice. The easiest method is to start with several small dots across the area you want to place it and then connect the dots with short lines to fill in between them. Once you're used to it you can use fewer dots until you just eliminate them. You can also try practicing on a grape or other small roundish fruit...although the perspective of "drawing" in front of you is different you'll get the feel of applying it to a rounded smooth surface.
Note: Given that liquid eye liner isn't conducive to smudging into surrounding eye make-up for blending it's much more effective for upper than lower lashes. If you're not very careful about the amount you use on the lower eye you can very easily end up looking harsh.

Hi. Liquid eyeliner is tricky because it can be very hard to put on at first. The great thing about it is that it will stay on longer, but can smudge more easily throughout the day. You are applying the eyeliner at the base of the eyelashes on the lid and then, you are lining the lower crease as well, it's actually a matter of preference. TO make the eyeliner stay longer, sometimes it works really well to put loose powder on top of your lids first. To get it really close and in a straight line, you need to pull your eye taut. It's really bad for your skin becuae you are pulling, correct skin care will teach you to pull up and out on the upper lid of your eye to prevent sagging and wrinkles, but to get the thinnest line, pull your eye taut at the side so it's tight and smooth. To get a bigger looking eye, you won't want to line the whole way around the eye, and a smaller looking eye, you WILL line the whole way around. Give it some time to dry. Good Luck!

I put mine in a VERY thin line above my top eyelashes. Too thick and you look like a racoon. The easiest way I have found to put it on is to close your eye and using your fingertips gently pull the skin taunt on the eye your applying to. This will smooth aout the lash line and make it easier to make a straight line. The only sure-fire way to get a straight line is to practice! I still goof sometimes and Ive been doing it for 10 years!

usually it shouldn't be that hard to 'apply it in a straight line,' but it depends on how thick you want it.
if you would like to have a thick line, basically you could apply it anywhere and it would end up how you want it....if you would like a nice thin line you should apply riiiiiiight above your eyelashes, dont apply to close to the fact that it gets in your eyes, liquid eyeliner stings very bad if you get it in your eye, (well most kinds)..i would say that you should just go back to the stick kind, it is much easier to work with and very easy to apply.
good luck

Liquid eyeliner is easy, your friend is wrong, you put it on top. To make a straight line you just get as close to your eyelashes as possible with out getting it on your eyelashes of course, and just practice, practice makes perfect and once you get the hang of it its no problem.

Don't buy one with a brush, buy a branch with a thin sponge applicator like ArtLiner Lancome. Get the girl at the counter to show you how to put it on your eyes. Don't ever "stretch" out your eyelid, the tissue is delicate and overtime will stretch out the skin..............ick

practice with the slanted tiny brush meant for the liquid eyeliner.
then soften it by smedging it, thus it does not have to be perfect
it is not supposed to be perfect, but soft
