The ceremony is about...
Each person has his/her own ideas and representations according to their own beliefs, dreams, etc...
But basically the ceremony represents a "public confession". The man and woman publicly ackowledging their commitments and vows.
It is and has been throughout history a momentous occasion in a womans life. The ceremony represents her being "given" away. It was/is a great and wonderful celebration, filled with high emotions and memories cherished for a lifetime.
But, yes, definitely the power must first come from and ultimately reside within the people, and the ceremony, in reality, is just human natures ways of ensuring we have a reason to "PAAAAAAAAARTY!!!

I believhe power is within the people. How the people use this power (or abuse and or neglect it is a another matter) is different from couple to couple.
In my opinion the ceremony is a public declaration of love for each other, with vows to be heard by all that the two are together and all shall respect that choice. It is also a celebration for the couple for having made the declaration and vows.

I It has nothing to do with your love for someone. I think it has a lot to do with society and religious groups more than anything. It is actually harder to get a divorce (if it comes to that) than to just walk away from a relationship. I truly don't know why people get married anymore. My friend spent 20,000 on her wedding and got divorced 2 years later what a waste. By the way I am a hopeless romantic and that is why I think that Love is about Love and nothing else. Not even a wedding. Society has made it all about lawful things like money and credit and taxes BLAH BLAH BLAH real romantic. It sucks because I think people feel safe if they get married like it is some special force against all that can go wrong between people. It should be about loving someone so much that no matter what, you will stay by them and love them for them.

The ceremony is for the caterer, the DJ, the flower shop, the other fine shops who get rich off of it all. Oh and the bride too! The groom would usually just go to Vegas and say the heck with it. If the groom is smart he will learn these two words thru the whole planning and structuring of it all....."Yes honey", feel free to change it up with sweetie, darling and other endearments. They also work in the marriage.

IT's a ritualistic expression of your inner feelings in front of people you love and they are the witnesses to the vows you make to each other. With the ceremony you marriage is acknowledged and approved by your church (etc) and your community.

So that everyone can witness the couple make their vows and declare their commitment to each other, of course.
