Probably from non-stainless parts holding on the handles. I'd give you advice on that, oil and soaking, but I'll let you come up with it. I've had problems with rust accumulating at the junction of the blade and handle from the brass colored rivets attaching the handle.

The spots are crystallized salts from the dish washing detergent that over the years will initiate sluggish corrosion of the metallic. in case you have rather reliable knives you may sparkling them by using hand and not in the dish washing gadget. And make useful you sharpen them with somewhat oil on a stone. you're able to do away with those spots by using sprucing the knifes heavily by using hand. A drop of vegetable oil makes this sprucing much less complicated.

You really shouldn't put stainless steel in the dishwasher, you should hand wash and dry.

Don't let them touch any other kinds of metal tableware while they are in the dishwasher. It is a chemical reaction between them and the other metal in the presence of the strong detergent.

If they ain't kitchen knifes, I've heard if you put some WD-40 on the blade, it'll keep it from rusting.
