conditions are much safer, there is less gender/race discrimination.

your question is too broad - you need to scope it a bit - what kind of work are you thinking about (i.e. office work ? construction work ?) and how far back are thinking (10 years ago ? 100 ? 1000 ?). If you're looking for some one size fits answer like "I the past work conditions were not as good as they are today" you're not really get at the issue.
