Most likely it's your CV joint on the axle. If it's crackling especially when you turn then that's what it is. You need to get this repaired as quickly as you can as it will leave you sitting.

You can either purchase just the CV joint and pull the axle and replace just that...but I would recommend just buying the entire assembly from your auto parts store and replace it that way. Replacing just the CV joint which is bad may be more economical...it's a messy and sometimes difficult job. Replacing the entire assembly is much easier.

is it doing it when you are turing corners ? that would be perhaps a bad axel joint commen problem. Also a bad hub bearing a lower speeds makes a cracking noise if the race is damaged enough alowing extra movement ( up and down motion )

Look into a Axel - do them in a set of 2 dont just do one - the other will follow soon enough.

could also be a broken sway bar link or a bad wheel bearing, have had both of those things happen on my grand am.

CV joint needs to be cleaned at least, replaced at worst.
