Socialism is perfectly viable. Sweden has had a socialist government for all buy 10 of the last 80 years, and they are one of the richest countries in Europe, with amongst the highest living standard in the world. Almost every developed nation has some form of socialism - except the US. Western Europe has either heavily subsidised or free healthcare, in the US you have to pay the whole lot. Many European countries have a large benefit system for those who are at a disadvantage - people with large families to support, the disabled, the (unavoidably) unemployed etc. The assumption that taxing people more is unfair is completely wrong - everyone benefits from the system, so everyone should pay for it, plus it is beneficial to everyone, so there is no reason not do it. It's hard to understand the thinking behind "if you can't support your child you shouldn't have got pregnant" that is within the US psyche - the complete lack of pity or support.

It is not whether socialism is still viable. It has never been properly attempted. All historical attempts have degraded to Stalinist dictatorships. Yes, socialism is still a better alternative to capitalism. All it needs is vigilant, democratic leadership.

It never was. Socialism relies on two false assumptions. First, that advancement of the "public" is a greater motivator than advancement of self. Second, that people are inherently good. They aren't. We are all sinners saved by grace.
