it's not nice to call PC "slow"... they prefer the term "Microsoft Challenged"...
check Start --> Run --> MSConfig and see what services / apps are running
Also, have you tried spydoctor?

Adding to what the other people have said, run the Microsoft Clean Up application. This will remove any Temporary Internet Files and other useless junk. De-fragment your drive, check it for errors and also download a Registry Editor (one that is trusted). The Registry stores all the little bits of info that tell the PC where to look for things. The more programs and rubbish you add and delete, the more cluttered the Registry becomes. Deleting invalid entry's will help speed it up. But you MUST back-up the registry first as without it the PC will not work!

You have too many start up programs probably. Either get rid of some or wait! Go to accessories/system tools and defragment your drive. If you only have 250 meg of memory - get more memory. A lot of laptops are cheap, because they have slow processors - minimal memory and smallish hard drives.

Try looking for spyware us ad-aware
http://www.lavasoft.de/
Also try doing a defrag.
You may also have too much starting up on startup goto run type msconfig.exe click the startup tab those are most of the things starting up on startup but be careful what you turn off........if you are running any programs in the right bottom corner on the toolbar try to access those programs and see if they have a thing about starting up on startup some examples are yahoo and msn messanger.

Run the msconfig utility. Go to Start, then Run and type in: msconfig
Go to the startup tab
You will see a list of all the programs that are loaded when your computer starts up. Uncheck any that you do not have to have. (Usually you can uncheck them all). If you decide you to need one, you can go back and recheck it.

More info needed.
What make & model?
Has it suddenly started starting slowly?
If it has, what have you recently installed or done?
There could be many reasons....

You may need to clean up your cookies and temporary files and then defragment your drive.
