If a person were to hang themselves, say in their basement, with a good quality thick rope and jumped off the chair and the rope was tight, do they die immediately or to they linger in the air a while with feet dangling and choking????

If you jump hard enough and are heavy enough you would break your neck instantly and die on the spot. If you neck didn't break however, you would survive until your body couldn't get any more oxygen (about a min or 2)...test how long you can hold your breath and it would be about 30 seconds after that.

I sincerely hope you are not asking because you are interested in doing it. There is nothing in this world worth killing yourself over.
There is so much good out there that some people let the bad "get in the way".
I would never try to find out. I can't imagine that it would be fun at any rate.

you will linger for a while
it will hurt and you will feel like your choking. if you want to kill yourself over dose on something like vicodin
