I got hired by an accounting firm. I was supposed to start work in July. I asked for an extension so that I could study for the CPA exam. The firm gave me the time off I requested. Now, I start in October, and I realize that I still NEED more time to study...I am afraid to ask for another extension of time off because they might get tired and fire me, even before I start. They were already very generous with giving me the extension of time off. Studying for the CPA exam will be harder with my work obligation on top of that...It is very time consuming...I want to start work with a clear mind thinking I passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam before I start....any suggestions for me?

I would start the work. There may be someone there who can help with the exam, and you probably will need money sometime.

You are an accountant, you know all about risk - to me the risk of losing the job, if you really want that particular job, are far too great to take the risk. You can try the strategies mentioned here, but before you do, ask yourself, is it ok with me to lose this opportunity? Is there anything very unique about the opportunity? How mcuh time and effort did I invest to get the offer I wanted? Also, you have not passed your CPA yet, and there is still a risk (though perhaps small) that you will never pass it. Is this job putting you at a CPA level without having the CPA in hand? If so this is hard to find and makes the position that much more valuable.

Also to my point about the risk of not passing - you could study hard and feel ready and still not pass. You can keep doing this for years. I would start the job on schedule (provided its not going to be an issue you didn't complete the exams yet).

One last point, even if they don't call off the employement offer and you get a second extension, and assuming you are then successful and get all your studying done and pass all 4 parts (a pretty big assumption) you will still have asked for more than you originally bargained and it could have unanticipated long term consequences on your relationships with anyone and everyone in the company, and could affect your performance ratings and career progression.

In short way too much risk, no way would I ask for another extension.

It sounds like you have established rapport with the employer. The problem is, as long as you are not working, there is work that needs to be done at that business. I suggest you contact the employer, let them know that you have dedicated all of your time to study for the CPA exam, but that your estimated time to start was a little short. Let them know how eager you are to work with them. Perhaps you could negotiate a compromise. Work part-time (on a "probationary period") at a reduced salary while you are still studying. This way, you can demonstrate your talents, knowledge and ability, help the employer achieve their goals, while still ultimately achieving yours. Be sure to get in writing that when you earn the CPA, your salary and working conditions are as originally negotiated.

A lot of people work while going putting themselves through college. If you take the job will you have less time to study, absolutely. I find it hard to believe though that you can't pull both off. Budget your time wisely. Last thing, you may have to cut down on your social life, but in the long run taking this job will be the right thing to do.

You need to set your priorities. I find it hard to believe that you've been studying 24 hours a day for the last few months and you're not ready yet for your exam. Get off the computer, turn off your phone, kick everyone out of the house, and study your *** off.

. Instead of asking more time off, have you thought about talking to them to see if you could work part time or even doing some of the work from home on a part time bases. That way you could ease your way into work with less stress . It's just a thought

well the way I see it, if worst came to worst and you have to take one of the exams over, it will probably be easier than finding a new job if they tell u to hit the road....dont push your luck

Be Honest. Tell them you can start when they need you but let them know where you are at. Not quite where you want to be as far as finished with your schooling. They should understand.
