- Because they cannot afford the cost
- Or because they underestimate their kids ability to graduate
- Or because they (themselves) did not attend and feel a college education is a waste of time.
Or because they resent their kids having a better life
Or because so parents believe women's place is the kitchen
Or because they are stupid, ignorant, or all of the above,

Your question would seem to imply that good parents encourage their kids to go to college, and that if a parent discourages their child from doing so then they are failing the child. College is not for everyone. On an individual level, a given child may simply not be academically-inclined, and the parents know that after seeing their child go through 12 years of school. On a societal level, there are many important and well-paying jobs that do not require a college education that some one has to do - do you want to pay someone a college-graduate salary every time you need a relatively simple good or a service ?

I think it could be a number of things.
For me, I grew up in poverty, so it was never an option, discussion, or idea. I went all the way through high school with not one single meeting with a guidance counselor. I feel through the cracks as well as many other children each year.
Another reason I think is due to "small" thinking verses "big" thinking. Some parents may not push their kids for selfish reasons, they don't want their kids to be better than them-and they're crazy people like that in the world. Or like me, they never even knew it existed.
Thankfully God had other plans for me and my 4 younger sisters.
We were all educated in our adult life except for the youngest who went to college immediately after graduating high school....she is in MED SCHOOL!!!

If they are Jehovah's Witnesses, because "the rapture" will come before the young people live out their working lives, therefore, advanced education is a waste of time and money.
Some people hated school and are glad they didn't go to college and want their children to feel the same way.
Some parents are angry and jealous that their children are so smart and don't want the youngsters out-doing them.

Because over 70% of jobs in the workforce require less than a 4-yr degree and a lot of people spend way too much money on a degree they will never use.
In general, don't go to college just to go to college. Choose what you want to do with you life. . .live a little, learn a little.

I've never heard of that. That's an awful idea.
Actually, I think in some poverty-stricken families, parents would rather have their children get a job so they can immediately contribute to the household income. Other than that, I don't know.

I have talked to my son about college when he was picking out what elective classes he wanted to take this yr. (he's a soph) Well, his interests are in construction and autos. So for now if that is what he is planning to do when he graduates then he can go to Jr. College for classes he may need.
Not only that, but personally I think it would be better for him to go to a Jr. College for a year or two.

Fear that their child is too immature to be away at college.
Fear of the unknown.
If they did not go to college, it is harder to give advice to their children about it. Hopefully they would ask a trusted friend.
Lack of money.
"Empty nest" syndrome.
Fear that their child will move away and live far away.
Lots of reasons.

I have had some family members complain about college and even public schools being run by "dirty" or "godless liberals." These are, of course, the radically right-wing conservative Christian family members.
