I used HTML For Dummies. But honesty I would never had conquered the code without the help of a friend. Buy the book and find a friend who can get you started.

Google is your friend. Do a search for Web Design, or something similar, and you will find thousands upon thousands of sites which provide tutorials on everything from making a simple page to learning a new programming language.

I (texxsmith.com) learned by rerading all about JavaScript, Flash, ActionScript, VB Script and reading the source code of other web sites. You'll also need to learn FireworksMX and/Or Photoshop (Fireworks Mx is much better)
And of course practice, practice, practice!
And the other thing is if you want to be a web designer you'll also have to learn how to do sales of course (to get people to pay you to do web design).
