If you don't have a legal version of Office then you will run into trouble. You're better off un-installing Office and downloading "Open Office" which is JUST AS GOOD as MS Office but it's FREE!!! I don't know how fast your Internet connection is so you might want to start downloading ASAP.

**EDIT**
Forgot to mention that one of the good things about Open Office is that you can open MS Office documents and any document you create in Open Office can be saved as a MS Office document.

have you tried rebooting your pc?

is any of your software (microsoft word or windows xp) an illegal copy? because if it is then that is why you are getting that message.

for your project, open it in wordpad instead:
start > programs > accessories > wordpad

you should be able to work on it some more in that application.

if you're 100% sure that all your software is legal, pay a visit to:
http://support.microsoft.com/

or contact them directly as soon as possible and you will get help.

Download Open Office for free, it will allow you to edit any word or excel document.

If you have installed Office 2003 probably it is not activated.
Once activated the program will run without any problem.
You can download a free 60 days trial at: http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/standardtrial.mspx
Here you can find some articles about activation: http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?query=activate+office&catalog=LCID%3D1033&spid=&qryWt=&mode=r&cus=False
