I work as a nurse in the emercency room. I called off work sick today because I woke up with a migraine headache, so bad that I was throwing up, and had to lay in bed in the dark for over 3 hours until my medications kicked in. My girlfriend called during her lunch break, and told me that I really let them down, because they were swamped. And a headache is not a reason to call in sick. This is only the second time in 5 years that I have called in sick. Now I feel really quilty. I know what it is like when we have to work short handed. But I also feel like I shouldn't have to feel quilty. I was really sick. I want to let her know how she made me feel. But part of me just wants to let it go. How would you feel. And what would you do if anything?

You work as a nurse in the Emergency Room…
The people you look after, are dependent on you for their survival…
Had you gone to work in the condition you were in, you would have put the lives of the patients at risk !

Here is a scenario for you to consider…
You went to work with a migraine that was so bad, you were throwing-up all the time.
You were so sick, that you neglected your responsibility toward a patient, and as a consequence, the patient died !!!

Hey… Taking only two sickies in five years, when you work in such a demanding and responsible position, is not something to feel guilty about !!!

The Emergency Room being ‘short staffed’ is not your fault…

You asked… what, if anything, I would do about it.
Put it this way… If I was you, and I went to work in the condition I was in, then chances are that I would have been sent home, and told not to come back to work until I felt better.

You did the right thing by not going to work !!!

Tell your girlfriend that ‘two sickies in five years’ is not what you consider to be ‘letting her down’.
You were too sick to go to work, so you didn’t go…
If your girlfriend can’t handle that, then too bad for her !!!

Mind you…
If the migraine was the result of you having a night out on the booze…
My response would be more in line with your girlfriend’s point of view !!!

There is nothing to feel bad about. Having a headache that makes you throw up and have to stay in the dark warrants calling in sick. Your friend is just upset that she was at work well you weren't. I would let her know that you were sick and if she doesn't believe you then maybe she really isn't your true friend.

bad headaches and being sick - you wouldnt have been any good to anyone anyway so you did the right thing - your friend wasnt there to see how sick you felt and is just a little cross because they were so busy and stressed, if anything is mentioned again just tell her how ill you felt and also point out that this isnt something you do each day - dont be made to feel bad your patients wouldnt have thanked you if you had been poorly whilst treating them would they?

You know, if she did that you may have to re-evaluate your friendship status. I would never do such a thing to a work friend as I would not want that done to me. You should not have to justify to anyone you work with your illness except by the rules set forth by your employer. If you need a note, etc., thats not her business. I would just cool off the friendship for a while and see what happens. If she asks, just let her know that you didn't appreciate her trying to make you feel guilty.

well it sounds to me like since you were feeling guilty then you either consciously or subconsciously knew you were able to go into work and could have helped out but you wanted a day off so you talked yourself into thinking you were more sick than you actually were

this happened to me the other day and i just felt so bad about trying to take a day off for myself just because of a little allergy problem I ended up rushing out the door at the last second before I would have been late

I would just say that you needed a day off because of all the stress or something like that that u have been going through along with your throwing up, i wouldnt mention headache, just say you were throwing up and kind of make it sound like you were constantly throwing up and it kept coming back, a little white lie never hurt anyone
