This relative of mine, a high school student was expelled for the rest of the school year because they found a pocket knife in her car. The school was doing random searches of students' cars leaving the parking lot after school as always. Another family member supposedly left the pocket knife in there.

This was a mostly white suburban high school with absolutely no crime in the area besides occassional "petty" crimes.

This girl was a 3.5 GPA student. She's a Junior. Her folks will have to send her to an "alternative" school filled with seedy young people until the high school allows her back next year. This will put a huge damper on her college hopes with this on her permanent record.

I have zero tolerance for zero tolerance, its stupid, reducing policy to slogans for stupid people, its political grandstanding. Maybe people will grow up some day and see thru this nonsense. Maybe not. Til then they will be causing injustices like the one you brought up, I'm sorry it happened. Maybe democracy isn't such a hot idea, people don't seem to be up to it.

i would appeal to the school board and see what happens. It seems extreme. My opinion of zero tolerance as a teacher is dim anyways. I think EVERY situation deserves scrutiny and that there should be an opportunity to explain and perhaps even some sort of hearing. The kids who try to burn down buildings get hearings and are allowed back to school ...... i think she should appeal this to the school board or whatever policy the district has (all have an appeals process) in the meantime, see about getting into a private school and if necessary contact the state dept. of ed and find an attorney

I'm not a big fan of zero-tolerance really, most situations have gray areas, as this one done. I would feel very agreived if that happened to a relative of mine.
So no, I can see the logic behind it, but I don't agree with the schools actions.

my question wouldn't be if it's good use of zero tolerance...I'm wondering if it's even legal for the school to do searches of the students private property...it's not like it's a locker that they would have access to.

i totally think that is stupid because some people keep pocket knives in their cars just in case they need to use it for like an emergency or sumthing, i would say that even if it wasnt her kife, it was smart having it in there
