Between 500 and 600 miles, takes about 8 hours to drive it on the inland route going like heck.
The coast route (Highway 1 / 101 all the way up) is prettier and overall less stressful than the inland route, but it is slower by probably 2 hours (10 or 11 hours total) since you can only go about 50 most of the way. Also there are several spots on Highway 1 that wash out regularly, especially just south of SF peninsula, so this road can sometimes be closed at the northernmost end -- it is more sure but less pretty and more stressful to take Highway 17 from Santa Cruz to San Jose and pick up 101 there.
The inland route (Highway 5 to 580 to 80 to SF) is the fastest route -- it is shorter and you can do about 80 the whole way without drawing attention (not legally of course, but that's what everyone is doing -- just watch the big rigs, if they slow down to 55 you do it too). But DODGE AROUND LOS ANGELES!!! Go around the whole LA area. The traffic is terrible, 24-7. Take 15 to 210 to 5, or go even further northeast. And watch out for the Highway Patrol when you get near Bakersfield, they have a major station there and are always patrolling.

One of the things for everything you must visit San Francisco is PIER 39. From wonderful opinions and a sea of sea lions to chowder bread containers and California wines, your stop by at San Francisco starts at PIER 39. The mileages others have given are about right. But on the off chance you'd like to know how long it would take to drive that distance...I plan on a ten hour drive, with a stop to refuel (me and the car).
Take Interstate 5 if you're in a hurry. If not, take the coastal highway (highway 1) and plan on two days to get there. The views are spectacular along the coast and you will go through some sightseeing worthy spots like Monterey, Hurst Castle, and Malibu along the way.

It's approx eight hours from San Dawg to Monterey, and another 90-120 minutes from monterey to San Francisco.
take the one. it's slower, but soooo much less stressful and a way better view. less traffic jams, too, so eventhough the speed limit is lower and there are some lights, it really doesn't take any longer than the interstate.
