For my Government class, I was supposed to look up federal funding dealing with a legal drinking age. What I found was this:

"“The legal age for alcohol in the USA is 21 years old. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 required all states to raise their minimum purchase and public possession of alcohol age to 21. States that did not comply faced a reduction in highway funds under the Federal Highway Aid Act. The U.S. Department of Transportation has determined that all states are in compliance with this act. The national law specifically prohibits purchase and public possession of alcoholic beverages. It does not prohibit persons under 21 (also called youth or minors) from drinking."

Anyways, I wanted to know people's opinions with this, dealing mainly with the federal funding. If you have something that would be appropriate for my class, please answer.

Are you sure that it doesn't prohibit persons under 21 from drinking? If an over 21 person buys alcohol and gives it to an under 21 person, even in their own home, the person can be arrested for it. You might want to check on that, maybe that part was revised later on.

I think 21 is appropriate, although some people aren't ready at 21 to drink, but usually those people never are good drinkers. The truth of the matter is I drank more when I was in high school then now (legal age now). I think if 18 year olds were allowed to drink there would be more accidents and deaths.

In my opinion the states were forced to accept this law because of the loss of federal funding for highway repair would have been a great loss. Most states rely on this funding to repair higways, bridges, and streets it also funds new road construction. Without these monies, repair and construction would all but come to a halt.

It is silly to try to select an age when people are mature enough to make wise choices. Some people should never drink because they don't know their limits. The funding attached is to discourage underage drinking and driving.

I think it's totally bogus that you have to be 21 to drink but 18 to die for the good ol' federally funded USA!

this is what i think.... i think that the US should lower their drinking age... europe has a low drinking age and they dont have drinking problems. if we lower our drinking age sure atfirst we will have alot of drinking problems but eventually they will learn that drinking isnt that smart. kinda like smoking pot or doing other drugs... most of the people i went to highschool with realised they pretty much wasted 5 years of their lives smoking pot n drinking. so if we lowered it maybe it will get bad at first but then calm down after a few years

I don't think people should drink until they are in there mid 20s and they are very mature because there are 21 year olds drinking and contributing to minors because they are not mature or resposible . that is why alot of teens are getting killed.
