wow, this is one that causes me to actually use a few brain cells & really think. what an interesting concept! fear is one of those slippery feelings, that seems to worm its way into so many aspects of life, and then ignites a whole bunch more. If you consider a spark or a flame as the catalyst to an explosion, I guess it would follow that fear is at the root of violence. We do what we can to avoid the negative feelings, especially those that seem to contain elements of truth that we don't want to acknowledge. often we find ourselves defending against a grave "unknown" - in the form of a worry, that if we would only take a moment of courage, and move toward clarification, or understanding. Even if it's only to agree to disagree. Dominance seems like a need to compensate for fear. sorry for this stream of random thought.....but it's intriguing. Yep, i would say you have a point there. great question!

yes atrocities of the worst kind can be brought about by fear and and its something that can be used for control in 1 person or in a whole nation the most obvious example of this was Hitler its hard to understand how the German people condoned what was happening in Nazi Germany and its not logical to assume they were all sick and evil .the fact is they were brainwashed by fear and it was done in a sly way little bits of information here ,something a bit more frightening there. A bit like a leaky tap .They were going to be attacked this had happened that had just been discovered in time but next time!!!?and things said about Jews and other minorities till it all stuck there in there head as one and the same thing Jews were evil and had to be stopped before the Jews destroyed them at the same time the papers and news was all that had been done against Germany but the things done by Germans was swept under the carpet and they truly felt they were the victims ,and in a sense they were there`s more to it but people should `nt forget where it all leads and its going on now and the ones being brainwashed haven't got a clue they think their patriotic and if you ask an old German why they let the Holocaust happen they`ll be sick with shame and they all have the same answer we did`nt know

Violence can certainly be caused by fear. There's an old Twilight Zone episode where there's a rumour in town that aliens, disguised as humans have come and shut down all the power so they can attack the people. Everyone starts freaking out. One guy's electricity goes on, so everyone assumes he's the alien and goes after him. Another neighbor who has just come back from getting help is mistook as an alien in disguise, and he is shot dead. There is pandemonium. Finally, the camera pans back to a distant hill, where two aliens (who look like men) are operating a gadget to control electricity. One turns to the other and says something to the effect of, "We didn't even need to attack them. We just had to flip some switches and wait for them to turn on each other."

Yeah, that makes sense. When someone is violent towards someone else (or even themselves) it seems to be because they fear something and use violence as an unnecessary way to defend themselves against something that often isn't harmful in the first place.
If it isn't because of fear, I'd say it would be because they get a thrill from it, but maybe it still goes back to fear, I don't know.

mavis knows

fear and insecurity go hand in hand... when someone feels vulnerable, they feel like they need to protect themselves. And sometimes the means of protection turns into violence.

you may have a point there, because when a person or group has a specific fear of something or someone, they tend to become more defensive as they interact with it/them.
but i think it also depends on what the people are afraid of and how they respond to the person's fear.
