Nope, they have a little "button" on the end of their tail, and they add segments to it as they shed their skin. There's a myth that you can count the segments to determine their age... But they don't shed exactly once a year, they don't always add segments, sometimes they add more than one, and sometimes they fall off.

I had a close encounter with a rattle snake when I was river rafting. My daughter and I were rafting and we pulled over to eat lunch and take a break. Well I was picking up and there was this old garbage bag so I thought I would be a good Samaritan and pick it up. I was doing that when a baby snake lunged at me. I wasn't sure what it was until I looked close. It didn't have rattles but it's tail was vibrating. Needless to say, it was a baby rattler. I was really lucky not to have been bit. I have heard for every year they get a new rattle almost like the rings of a tree. I hope this helps you.

They are born with a tiny little rattle called a button. More sections are added to the rattle as the snake gets older but not regularly so it is not an indication of the snake's age. They have venom and are not yet experienced at controlling how much they inject. They often inject more than necessary so they are very dangerous.

baby rattlesnakes are born with one link in their rattle and therefore cannot rattle it. It takes one shed to add another link before they can actually make the infamous sound with their rattle.
