There's probably a 3 or 4 percent charge per $100 via PayPal. It'd be a lot easier and cheaper for you if you and your roommate just got an account at the same bank so that you could automatically transfer funds to his account without having to go through PayPal and incurring services charges, plus having to wait three or four days for the money to go through.

That's not practical in the least.
First you'd both have to have paypal accounts, your roommate will probably have to get an upgraded account which will take a cut of the money, about 1-2% of what you're paying in, which means you will have to pay MORE to him in rent to break even, and then they have to wait 3-4 business days to get the money back in their own bank account.
Just use a money order or a check and keep it logged in your register. Assuming you have one. Finances are probably one of the last things you should be lazy about.

He should still pay the rent but not the utilities. If he plans on coming back then he still needs to pay. I have an apartment and if I told my landlady that I am not paying for the month I am on vacation I can guarantee I would be evicted. Subletting the room isn't a good option because you don't know who it will be. I'm with you one this one. If he doesn't like it maybe he needs to find another place. From your side it seems like he is trying to take advantage.

As long as you can print receipts to prove you paid. If you pay by check, you create a paper trail that proves you made a payment, if there's ever a dispute (and there usually is at some point, especially if you're in college and have several roommates)

If you use your debit card at your bank to get cash, you won't pay any fees, and your roommate won't have to pay any fees for the privilege of having you pay what you owe. Why would you need PayPal? (Though it is great for business transactions over the web...)

It is easy. There may be a charge for him to accept the money. It's pretty instant. I like that I can track the charges.
