There is nothing terribly wrong with it, if I recall the same shock came after learning Jack Nicolson got the part in the first Batman...
If it were to be entirely someone else I would probably say... someone one we haven't heard of. Then we wouldn't have as much to whine about!
If it had to be a certain celebrity... Robin could pull off crazy, but not killer... Tom Cruise IS crazy and psychotic, but too handsome... Jack Nicolson is too old now... best option may have actually been Heath Ledger, he is fit enough to counter Bale, he is a marginally good actor, and judging Brother's Grimm, A Knight's Tale, and 10 Things I Hate About You I think the evil is just bottled somewhere inside and should be let out.

if you look at most comics and animations, the joker is usually portrayed as a thin angular man, while jim carey could pull it off, he would overact the role and ruin it, heath ledger is a pretty good actor, but i think his face is too broad (although, he has the smile down pat)
i'd say almost any english actor would work... i'll let you choose.
