There is no way to answer that and come up with a decent answer.
Geography plays such a HUGE role in that answer. Making $30,000, where I am from is plenty but the person next door might disagree. Opinion plays the next biggest part !!
It's not how much you make but how much you keep ! If you keep lots of $$$ soon it grows all by itself and you don't have to work hard at all !
aaaaaaaaaah life is good !

That is well above national average, but the cost of living in CA has to be taken into consideration. Average is probably between $35-$50k.

A good income is enough to save 25% towards retirement, pay for all your "needs" (mortgage, power & water bills, food, insurance, transportation), and have some left over for your "wants".
Some people are happy and wealthy on $30,000 a year, some people are miserable & struggling on $200,000 a year.
The secret is to need and want things that cost less than you earn!

According to the CIA's World Fact Book, the estimated per capita income in the US for the year 2005 was $41,800. California's per capita income in 2005 was $35,219 (13th highest in US. CT had highest followed by MA). You do the math...

What does nationally matter. What matters is that you are happy with what you are doing. And do you feel that you are being properly compensated for your skills. I stay at home with my kids and take care of them and my husband and my home. Do I earn an income? Yes, every penny that my husband earns. Am I happy with our income. Yes, it allows me to stay at home to take care of our kids. And my husband enjoys his job. Now if we lived in California, we would not be making enough to enjoy our lifestyle, but then the payscale is also somewhat dependent on the cost of living. And our average income exceeds yours.

That all depends on what the cost of living is for where you live, what type of lifestyle you wish to maintain, and can you pay off all your bills when they come in or not.
We all can dream big, but not all of us can pay for it.

that's decent even by Californian standards - especially since you are single. If you were a family man, I'd be worried.
