My almost 7-week-old son seems to want to eat more at night than he does during the day. Right now, he eats 4 oz of formula every 3 hours or so, but constantly acts hungry. My ped says he's in a growth spurt and suggested 4 1/2 to 5 oz... he doesn't seem to want that much at every feeding, though. Is it normal for a baby to want different amounts at different times? He was also 6 weeks premature, if that factors in at all.
And before anyone hollers at me for not breastfeeding, I can't because of a medication I absolutely have to take.

To richard... I had to do that when I first got him home from the NICU. The cold rag worked well!

Hi
I fed my daughter when ever she was hungry, and yes sometimes she ate more then others, I think it's normal and they know when they are full, so I don;t think you can overfeed him. I think all children are different. My daughter is know 2, she is the opposite, she doesn't eat as much when she is having a growing spurt, then she'll eat like a little piggy..

Yeas it is normal to not always want the same amount every time. He probably IS in a growth spurt, which will make him very hungry. If he is takinf 4 oz, he should be able to go at least 2 hours between feedings, possibly 3. Try putting an extra oz in his bottle, and if he takes it all, great, if not, then feed agian in a couple of hours. I know it is tough, but he will out grow it. And by the way, breast milk is NOT the be all and end all of infant nutrition!

So then he would be considered 1 week old, I think. I don't know how much help I can help you with, but when my son goes through a growth spurt he eats almost every hour. Feed him when he gets hungry.

We have two kids. Both girls werer like you son. If you son starts to sleep when drink the bottle, (I know this sounds mean), get a cold rag and wipe him down and that will wake him up to drink, thus keeping the belly full and you will get a better night sleep. Oue doctor recommended this and it worked.

my son was the same way. just keep trying different amounts each feeding until he shows you how much he wants. my son is 10 months now and still eats different amounts at feedings.
congrats on your new baby and good luck

some times baby's just want to suck, have you tried giving him a pacificer when he is acting hungry but does not want to eat. And yes so far as i know it is normal, you don't want to eat the same amount all the time do you? as long as he is eating, peeing ,pooping, and growing don't stress it to much

my 8 week old daughter does the same thing. I think it is normal- plus it also helps me establish more of a nighttime routine with her because she eats more and then gets so full she sleeps a tad bit longer.
