No one, and I mean NO ONE, knows the answer to this...I've tried and found that no one knows..It could even be that there is no answer to be found....but...here goes....
The Actor Edward J. Burns Jr. (saving private ryan, 15 minutes, Confidence, Life or Something Like It, The Brothers McMullen, She's the One, The River King) ;quite obviously has a middle name, hence the "J" but it cannot be found anywhere...

Michael J Fox doesn't have a middle name.
He put the J in to distinguish himself from the actor Michael Fox of the 1960s and1970s.
Maybe it's the same deal.
J seems to a popular middle initial for those who don't have a middle name.

Nice question. I noticed in his Bio that he is merely referred to as Edward Burns. Its` quite possible that he never had a middle name, but because his dad had J. as a middle name, he became known as E.J. Burns JR. Not saying this is true, but it is a possibility.

it is just there for show - to make him sound more interesting.
he probably made it up at the beginning of his career, and has just forgot to remove it now he is famous and doesnt really need it any more.
the use of a middle initial - but no name to go with it - can be found in many cases of movie/tv/music stars.
also some stars started out with middle names, or double barreled surnames, then shortened them when fame had been established.
for example:-
giles from buffy - started out as anthony stewart head, but stopped using stewart after buffy finished because he had established himself in the world of showbiz.
(he actually started out on tv in a nescafe coffee advert in uk)

Junior. My friend got saddled with J. for a middle initial that way because the midwife wrote his name backwards on the birth certificate.

I just tried to find it too, just for kicks. I had never heard of him before. From what I read about him, I think it's more likely James as his parents are from Ireland.
