The culture in your small team at the office is very relaxed. You usually wear black pants a simple top and flat pumps. The new girl is pleasant and you make friends with her, but she always wears a skirt suit, pressed blouse and 3 inch heels. She is about the same height as you in bare feet, 5ft 5", but her heels give her a good edge in height. You both do a great job but one of you is bound to get the team leader's promotion next year.

Do you change your dress mode? Match her heels or go higher with 4 inchers? Do you power dress in a skirt or pant suit or accesorize more? Or would it not affect your choice of clothes and shoes in the slightest? You decide!

Interesting quesion Tammi, normally I wouldn't let it affect me at all what others are wearing but if you are both going for a promotion to team leader you would have to ask just who is going to hand this promotion out? Is it a man who may be impressed by a nicely dressed lady each day or is it a lady who may not care to constantly see some other lady come in looking nicer than she dresses? If you feel that the person giving out the promotion is going to be at least partially persuaded by what each of you are wearing then you may have to step it up a bit. Dress to impress and wear the 4" heels.
If the person who is going to promote one of you goes strictly by the job performance and not how your dressed then you don't have to worry about how your dressed. Just go in each day and do the best job you possibly can.
I hope I didn't confuse you with all of this.
Good luck

You shouldn't change anything about yourself. You are a one of a kind person no matter what traits she has you have something she doesn't. If you are working in the same place you are both equally qualified to work there. So her being smart should not affect what you do. Just be sure that you don't let her distract you from doing good work same as you always have. If she gets a promotion based on the way she dresses then it is for the wrong reasons and you probably don't want to be the one getting it. She dresses that way to make people feel the way you do. She is trying to be intimidating. Don't let her affect you in any way. She probably feels the same about you. Never let something that someone else does affect your personal style and/or feelings.

Duh! Of course you change. This is war. You needed a wardrobe upgrade anyway. High heels are more professional, those flats are going to keep you stuck down in the cubicles you're whole career.

You need to go higher, 4's on a regular basis and some 5's for important meetings. Pantyhose or stockings, fitted suits with knee length skirts, silk blouses, classy jewelry, new hairdo and make sure you wear make up too, no more of that 'natural look'

You want that promotion, don't you?

No, I would not wear 3" heals just because SHE wears them and is pleasant and now your friend.
I would be confident in who I am, and maby take a good look in the mirror myself to see where I could improve with out copying the new high heal girl.

No, she is just a showoff the new person. You wear what you are comfortable wearing to work. If she gets a promotion before you do, then it is time to leave the company.

Be yourself. Focus on your work...hopefully, that will get you the promotion.
