There are several defferent etnic groups immigrating to the United States but there are no recordings announcing "if you want your answer in English press 1". There are no labels on shelves with Japanese or German as a standard. I say people who come to this country should learn the language not be molly coddled because if it's done for one language it should be done for every single one of them. Generations have been forced to learn English but it's not done now. It's not right to single out one specific group of people for special treatment because they don't BOTHER to learn the language of the country they SUPPOSEDLY now call home.

I know it's got to be challenging just as it was for all of our family members who came here in the mid 1800's. My family from England, Germany, Holland, Luxembourg. So you all are not alone. Millions of others had to struggle with a new language for the benefit of living in America.

But this is America, yes we have small villages within our country that still speak their own tongue. But English is our national language.

So aside from being a legal citizen and learning a language those would be the only requirements to live in and be an American.

English is and should be our national language.

Anyone moving to any country and calling it home. That is to say, keeping a permanant residence here, owning or working in a business and being schooled in a country, should learn the language and customs of that country and should speak that language and follow those customs with the public of that country.

Absolutely not. One language that is English, laws, signs, shoo ls, speaking in public, English. You can speak a hundred other languages, but USA is only one language for all. SO IF YOU DON'T SPEAK NOW then LEARN NOW.

I agree with you. We wouldn't go to France, have them tell us something in French, and go 'no no no - English, please!' So why should we allow them to do that to us?
