my girlfriends' dad just put all new brakes on my car. now when you do that, your supposed to bleed the brakes, and we did all that. now i notice the brake pedal seems to go pretty far down instead of what im used to. i was told its possible that air got trapped into the brake line. should i worry about this, and whats the solution to getting that air out so the brakes go back to normal. thanks

now i bled the brakes but when they were putting the back ones on, the pressure apparently shot out the plug on the back one and some brake fluid shot out. they got it back on, filled the brake fluid up as well.

First to do a brake job, you DO NOT have to bleed the brakes. You can simply compress the piston back into the caliper and not introduce any air into the system.

However, since you've already opened the lines, Yes you most likely have air in the lines. You need to jack the car back up and bleed the brakes again. PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE unitl you have the BRAKES FIXED. This is very very serious. You could kill yourself, or worse yet kill someone else.

I'm assuming you know how to bleed the brakes.

You need to bleed the brakes in a specific order.

If you did the rear ones. ALL brakes need to be bleed in this order.
Passenger Rear, Driver Rear, Passenger Front, Driver Front.

If you only did the front, then technically you only need to do the front. in this order
Passenger front, Driver Front.

Make sure you don't run out of fluid in the resevoir or you'll have to do all 4! (again!)

If you don't know how to properly bleed them, get the car towed to a shop. (Now ever consider that your girlfriend's dad doesn't like you much???)

Sounds like you should have went to the mechanic! But I'll be nice and help you out -this time.
First off I'm assuming all disc brakes? You must have all new shoes or pads and if shoes, properly adjusted! If all disc start in the back with the right rear wheel (pass side). Have some one pump up the brake pedal until hard and hold down! (DO NOT RELEASE UNTIL NEXT STEP COMPLETE) Have another person open the bleeder-let air out then close. NOW, re-pump pedal and repeat until all air our and just getting fluid! Keep your eye on the master cylinder brake fluid- don't let run out or you start all over!
Now repeat on all wheel going from and in this order only:
right rear pass side- to- left rear driver side- to- right front pass side-to- left front driver side!
If you have rear shoes instead of disc, (bleeding is exactly the same) you must check wheel cylinders for leaks and if necessary- replace prior to bleeding the brakes!!!! Don't rebuild because you don't know what you're doing and new would be your best bet on wheel cylinders. Be extremely careful changing the brake line so as not to "twist", "strip" or damage in any way!!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!
Try this and see how you make out. Should cure the problem. Next time go to local auto parts store and get Chilton's repair manual for about $15! Great investment for amateurs!!!!!!!!

You will now need to bleed the back brakes also seeing that you popped the end out of the cylinder and now you have air in the rear brake lines, also make sure you have the back brakes adjusted properly against the drums or you won't have a lot of brake pedal.

you just have to bleed the brakes a few more times. makes sure to keep the fluid in the master cylinder full so you dont suck more air down into the system. also bleed them in the order of furthest from the master cylinder to the closest.... ( RR, LR, RF, LF)

Sounds like you did get air in the lines. If you just change the pads you dont need to bleed them only when you open a line up. You need to fix this for it is dangerous to drive. Bleed them using someone who knows what they are doing.

If this is a car with ABS, take it to a mechanic and have them bleed the brakes.
