I think in the biological world, no organism has any advantage over any other organism. Unless ofcourse, you talk about the survival strategies of the organisms in the world.
If ability of plants to make food on their own is an advantage, it is the same ability that makes animals feed on them. Is it not a disadvantage?
When you consider life as whole, it is an advantage for without photosynthesis it life cannot survive on earth.

Yes it does give them an advantage. It gives them an advantage because with chloroplasts plant cells can use the sun to make food. this process is called photosynthesis. which is an advantage because animal cells have to find their own food.Yes it does give them an advantage. Nope. Animals are running around eating plants, and not the other way around.
On the other hand, plants with chloroplasts don't have to run around eating other organisms to gain energy.

Well, being able to make your own food out of air and water is certainly an advantage. But I'd still rather be a human than a tree.
