find a picture of the cowardly lion, print it out, and trace it onto a piece of thin cardboard. then cut the cardboard out and glue the picture to the piece of cardboard. next, find a scene of a jungle or something and glue it to the bottom of a shoebox. next, find a picture of an elephant or tiger or some other big animal, print that out, trace it on cardboard, and glue the picture to the cardboard.
so now you have 2 cardboard cutouts that you can place inside the shoebox (put the shoebox on its side, so that it's like a "stage"). you can make the cowardly lion look like he's roaring at the other animal, showing courage or something (like the courage that he got after the wizard gave him the medal). you can also put trees made of cardboard or clay inside the shoebox too, and you can draw in the yellow brick road.
or you could also make a ditch out of clay with a little clay castle on the side of the shoebox, and put the cutout of the cowardly lion behind the ditch - just like in the scene where he goes into kiamo ko with the scarecrow and tin man to rescue dorothy from the wicked witch. that would be a scene directly from the movie that shows his courage.

Find an old shoe box. Then get on line and find some clip art
of a medal of honor, A Wizard from Oz and a picture of
the Cowardly Lion. Print these up and glue them onto some
cardboard like an empty cereal box. Cut them out leaving a
tab at the bottom to glue the figures in the box. You could
also find a scene from the movie to use as a backdrop.
Hope this helps.

In response to Oracle this project is for MY Daughter and Pynnij is my mother who was trying to HELP my daughter with a school project not do the work for her, while I was at work. This is the first time she has ever had to do something like this and we were searching for different ideas not your silly little comments. If you get your rocks off searching for people to insult, search elsewhere. Maybe you should hangout in a chat room where other sad and lonely people will find your rhetoric amusing, as for us we do not. So if you feel the need to make anymore ridiculous and moronic comments please leave them for Ms. swann242 and I'll be happy to settle any angst you have built up in your pathetic little life.

I would vote Plasticine or play clay, it is easy to work with and comes in lots of fun colours!!!
As for a story line, I can only assume you mean the lion from the Wizard of Oz, and myself I would find a book with good illustrations and get her to copy it in the play clay. Then when you hand the diorama in to school have a label on the bottom of it identifying the illustration with page number and the name of the illustrator from the book. Well remember the name of the book as well. Have fun!!! Thanks for asking.

why don't you let your third grade daughter do the homework assignment, rather than you try to live vicariously through her and commandeer her assisgnments looking to improve your own precious vanity, when all you really will be doing will be setting her up for failure later when she can't depend on her own undeveloped skill set?
"Reach" doesn't mean "Reach for the lifeline to call my parent to help me with my projects." This is her project, let her do it.
