i haven't heard it since about 1998, but i still remember some of the lyrics to the chorus:
(girl voice): Are you johnny ray?
(guy voice): who wants to know?
(girl voice): are you sting ray?
(guy voice): who wants to know? who wants to know about me?
the chorus went something like that. i think the song came out between 1996-1998, but i'm not sure. the artist name might be johnny ray, if i remember correctly, but im not entirely sure about that either.
this has been haunting me for a long time! does anybody know the song title and artist?

It was "Are you Jimmy Ray?" by Jimmy Ray.
I don't think the lyrics are wrong and you misheard Johnny for Jimmy.

its actually "are you jimmy ray?" and its by (surprise surprise) jimmy ray. it mentions johnny ray in there too, but the name of the song is are you jimmy ray
