I don't know but when I was robbed at gun point and my car was stolen, it ended up 1500 miles away (in three weeks). I had to pay to have it towed to impound for evidence and then tow it back to me. I was pissed!

All the posturing and diatribe aside the reason is simple.
The tow company is a private for-profit business.
He didn't steal your car. He recovered it. He stored it. The thief is the one to be upset with, and the local prosecutor for making the recovery and prosecution of these crimes so low on the priority list.
The tow company has to pay the driver, the insurance, the fuel, his rent, truck payments etc. etc. etc.
If HE couldn't recover his costs and SOME profit, he would soon be out of business.
If you didn't have to pay, then WHO?
If the government paid, then we ALL would pay more in taxes, as that money has to come from somewhere.

In the late 50's we (society) began to move toward a "compassionate" liberality toward most misbehavior and crime. We now must pay the piper.
The ONLY thing we can do about it now is to INSIST that those we elect to positions of leadership and authority reflect what we really want and need in government, NOT MERELY what we will settle for.

Sorry about stepping on YOUR soapbox. You just woke a pet peeve in me, since I experienced the same affront several years ago.
I can't blame the poor tow company, though it was he who felt my wrath at the time.

Go AFTER the punks, and insist that they be prosecuted, and never mind the NO-FAULT insurance scam.

Good Luck

(Most won't like this......)

The reason is, that you do not own the car to start with; you only think you do (check your states Title Code for application)..

The "Tow Company" is a private for profit business who contracts with the local police departments to provide this service under certain guidelines; they put a lot of fancy names on this stuff, but it is all kickbacks to the city, county, and state (I used to work for a tow company so yes I know this for a fact, say what you will).

The Comment by others about: "If you did not pay, then who would?" is as much BS as you will hear - afterall the person who stole the car - and the other criminals in your state that pay into THE CRIME VICTIMS FUND (it is required in all court cases, even tickets) would then rob the Judges, City, Court, and Attorneys of money if they had to pay for it - and would also give them incentive to make sure the criminal paid well for his crime. The only person who would 'loose out' then would be the criminals.

as an FYI - check with your state about the Crime Victims Fund (It is a federal requirement) - and how to use that receipt for the car tow, and file with them to get the money back - it is then added to the cost of the case and charged against the criminal NOT your taxes like most 'think' ...

I assume you live in the good ol' USA. Call your insurance co. because they'll want to raise your rates as soon as they can. Call your lawyer to fight that, he'll/she'll rake more money out of you. If the car thief ends up in prison, you'll pay for his stay in jail through your tax dollars, while he enjoys cable TV, swimming pool, free education..... In the mean time you have to rent a car till yours gets repaired or till you get a new one. There are plenty laws, there just not set up in your favor. You must be a younger adult. Well, younger than I am anyway, as you get older, life has many more hidden joys for you to discover. Sorry to hear of your troubles. I really do hope it works out for you.
