Before I answer your question, I have one of my own..... You said that you formatted your computer.....I don't believe you
FORMATTING A DISK ERASES EVERYTHING
You may have re-installed your OS, but that isn't reformatting.....
*******
I had the same problem a while ago, and here's how I took care of it...
*******
If you want to KEEP the files, don't bother reading anymore, but if you want them removed, by all means, continue!
*******
I DID NOT reformatt my computer. I still had lots of valuable data on it that I didn't want to lose...
Instead, I installed........
NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2006!!!
In the 2006 version, there is an option to quarantine ANY folder of your choice..... and then delete it..... and it overrides ANY security, password, or permission crap....
Just locate the file using Norton Internet Security 2006, quarantine it, and then delete it!! "Easy" as that!
*******
Now, you may be saying "Well I don't have a copy of Norton Internet Security 2006..... and now they don't sell it anymore because 2007 is released....." Don't worry about that.
*******
Here's the trick:
>Find and purchase a copy of Norton Internet Security 2006 (somewhere)
>Install it onto your computer
>Quarantine the folder / file
>Delete the folder / file
>Uninstall Norton Internet Security
>Return the software claiming that you 'don't like it' or something along those lines.....
>Go back home and enjoy the freedom of "no annoying folders"
I hope this helps
GOOD LUCK!

Boot to DOS mode...I mean not the option restart on DOS mode ..
Use a boot disk either floppy or CD... If you know what directory the folder is ex. C:\folder just type this at dos prompt "rd folder"
or better yet get those norton commander dos version or an equivalent software file manager and delete it from there..
you can not delete the folder under windows because a program is using it...

You will love this one.
I will assume that you had to do a fresh install of your OS on top of an old one. The trouble is, your computer no longer recognizes those files as belonging to you!
Here is how to fix.
Step one, reboot computer in safemode with networking (press F8 repeadedly after the post finishes) You should have internet access to read this while in safe mode :D
now that your in safe mode, right click the folder in question and go to sharing and security. Click on security tab, then click on advanced. Then click on owner. There should be a option to take ownership of that. be sure to also tell it to replace ownership on subcontainors and objects.
This may take a while.
Last, click on permissions tabs, and add the administrator group to permissions. Shut down, restart, you have access to files. Feel free to email me I can help out as much as possible
Vinnie,
Unfortunately not, he has to take ownership of it first. but taking ownership can be done, so its not completly lost.
Now the second step of adding administrators as having access is only needed if he wants to access it without being in safe mode :D

Bryan,
I have a question for you:
If he were logged in as administrator, wouldn't he be able to delete (or do anything else he wanted with) the folder and contents?

While I don't really care about the points, giving some information like the name of the folder(s) would be helpful in determining why it won't let you open them.

Hi. The folder has an attribute set that prevents using or deleting. Reset the attribute in DOS. There are four but if you type "attrib ?" it will list them.

The file you are clicking on could be a ghost file. It could actually be saved somewhere else. DON'T Delete it! It could delete the file in the other place.
