He also stated that the earth was not the center of the universe, as many believed. Galileo claimed what can be considered the first attempt to explain the conception of a solar system. Finally, he was considered as a heretic by the Catholic church and was sent to jail.
Although he was "requested" to retract from his statement, he kept his position saying "E po si mouve", which means, "but it moves", rejecting the general belief that the earth didn't move.

Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and more. He has been referred to as the "father of modern astronomy." He is likely most recalled for his contributions about the telescope, but I think his work with laws of motion are actually more important.
