It's not technically in any county anymore, it's just the city by itself.
In the past, when county boundaries were more strict and counties had more significance in UK local government, Bristol has been in both Somerset and Avon. Avon no longer exists.

Bristol has ALWAYS been a county in its own right.
The County of Avon was created on 1st April 1974 out of a bit of Somerset, and was so costly it was scraped and replaced by 4 smaller counties on 1st April 1996.

Bristol is a city and county, so technically it is in Bristol!
I get post labelled 'Somerset' 'South Gloucestershire' and 'Avon' - it all seems to get through!
Some of my friends use the term Cuba - County that used to be Avon (Avon was abolished several years ago, but it is retained by some public service organisations like the fire service)

Bristol is no longer in Avon, as others have said - it's a city and a county.

Granted the status of City and County in 1373 by Edward 3rd. Avon created by Harold Wilson in 1973. When Avon was finally recognised for the drain on public money that it was, the City and County of Bristol was reinstated. A copy of the royal charter is available on the internet, foc.

an interesting question, it used to be in the county of Avon, however i don't think that any longer exists, if you look on a map it appears to be in Somerset, however the Gloucestershire cricket team play in bristol. So its one of the two, either somerset or gloucestershire
