Ask a friend who you know has a genuine copy, that's your best bet! Peace!

the question for you is this.

Do you have a legit code for that OS? (the retail or upgrade book with the orange sticker, or the OEM sticker on the side of the case)

If so, it in all honesty dont matter if the DISC is a copy, because the code is a legit original code (microsoft will tell you differently, but they cant police that.)

Now if your windows XP is telling you your copy may be counterfit, then it is the CODE that is in question.

Most likely you have windows xp pro (corporate) if this is the case. In this circumstance, you have 2 choices. Get a Windows XP Pro upgrade for $190 which will allow you to install as upgrade through windows to keep your programs and data intact, or buy XP home upgrade for $95 and do a fresh install.

These are the only legal options availiable to you.

Your best bet at a freebie is asking a mate, but the same thing will happen because windows, registers each copy under a different id code. you MUST either go online or telephone microsoft to register your product. so if you attemp to reregister an already registered copy, they will not allow it, and in 45 days it dies.

the alternative is to risk downloading a thousand viruses and spywares in an attempt to get a working code online, there are number generators out there that cliam to give you an active code. but i've never heard of someone using it successfully.

so i guess you either buy a copy or risk prison by nicking it from you local pc store!!

You can't. Microsoft uses activation. If someone gives you a disc it has probably already been activated and Microsoft won't accept it as genuine.

The only way is to buy one that has never been activated.
