The best thing you can use to line a rabbit's cage with is a paper-based product (such as CareFresh). You do not want to use regular newspaper (the ink is toxic to rabbits, and they will shred and eat some of it no matter how much other bedding material you have on top). You don't have to have anything other than that as the actual bedding. Just use that as the litter/bedding. Hay is for eating...not so much bedding, and you're only asking for more work if you use different layers like that. Keep it simple...your bunny will thank you for it. Oh, and never, EVER use any type of wood chip-cedar, aspen and pine are all very dangerous to a rabbit's respiratory system (they all contain oils that when a rabbit breaths will become trapped in their lungs and will cause all kinds of damage!!). Hope it helps!

If you are using litter it needs to be a paper based litter, some kind without dust, or with minimal dust. Our rabbit uses a litterbox so she has a nice linolium floor with her litter box, a basket with some hay, her toys, her house and her food dish. If you are going to be changing the entire bottom of the cage quite often then you can use newspaper or paper bags but they can get wet and soggy. Just make sure any newspaper uses soy based inks, most of them do anymore.

you should get the rabbits using a litter box in the cage if it is big enough.

The best thing I've found is the pine pellets they sell for horse bedding because it is very absorbent and eliminates odours better then cat litter.

you can use this in the cage or in a litter box.

I have 7 rabbits and 8 babies right now living in the house and it smells the same as any other house.

Any paper put in the cage will become wet and not healthy for the rabbit. When I used to raise rabbits commercially, we kept sawdust under the cages to make it easier to clean. But not IN the cage.

Rabbits like to chew on paper bags and shred newspaper. I would suggest that you start litter box training your rabbit. It will be much easier and cleaner for you. You should fill the box with wood stove pellets. they absorb odor much better than paper and they are cheap. http://www.rabbit.org

That is how i use to have my cage but i did have to clean it constantly and it started to become a pain in my butt.
Using that natural wood chips or those absorbent stuff in the petstores works great.. It absorbs it for you without a mess or smell. that has helped me with the smell too. even though his cage is outside the smell was getting annoying.. so you can pick and choose its up to you..

Yes newspaper is ok but make sure your bunny does not chew on it because the ink is not good for the bunny!! If he does chew on it you could always go to a pet store and get your bunny some of the fluffy pieces so your bunny will be comfortable but so your bunny can still dig. Hope i helped(:

nah, I would not do it, just you can use the special sand, but is not sand anyway, it's just .... something like the croquettes you give to the cats... my sister has one bunny and she uses this material, the bunny also can eat it, smell nice and is never dirty just a little wet then you change and is always clean ^^
