I have had fun reading all the responses to this question.
Now consider this very unique concept. Pull the filter out, look it over and if it is dirty, change it!
Yes it will need to be changed more often during the season that the unit is running.
You can't assign a generic time frame to this; it depends on usage as well as the size of the system just to name a few variables.
Start by checking it, let's say weekly. As I said if it's dirty change it.
This question is like asking, when do you change a babies diaper?
Or, when do you change a light bulb?
The answer is quite simply, you change it when it needs changing.

I'm always told by heating and cooling companies to change it once a month. They also said to use the disposable ones. The permanent filters that you manually clean are not good enough. If you are on top of changing your filters, your system works more efficiently and it will last longer.

Go buy the cheap ones and change it every month, and in the summer if you have central air
it helps with the amount of dust flying around your house

I change mine every month, but I get the cheap ones. It actually depends on what type you get.

to my customers I recommend twice a year, at the beginning of the heating season and once again at the beginning of the cooling season.
