They mean "derived from or composed of matter," in other words, things that are made of matter.

By matter, they mean "the substance or substances of which any physical object consists or is composed."

Material things are all the things around you. The Earth, your chair, you, a tree, your car, an earring, a butterfly, etc... every physical thing around you.
