My Dad once complained that no one ever bought him chocolates which surprised me as he was a bit macho.
So I decided I would buy him chocolates next birthday, unfortunately he died of a heart attack before his birthday - I wish he has said something years before.

Have a scavenger hunt. Get a lot of fun photos of you and the family and make a starting map or note to get him looking around the house for pictures and small gifts. For each picture or gift he finds have another note that will take him to the next gift or picture of him as a younger fellow or the family.
This is fun and make the last gift a cake and make sure to take a picture of him finding the cake! Just to get you started, I did this for my husband on his birthday. The first note was on the table in the kitchen. All the notes were in form of a poem...Birthday boy it is your day, for a gift or two you must find the way....go to the pace where you look at your face!...(this would be the mirror in the bathroom where there would be another note and a new shaver with a picture of him when he was little and had not started shaving...or whatever.) SEE this will be fun...good luck!

Not knowing your dad makes it difficult to answer this one. Look at his hobbies and interests. Perhaps a subscription to his favorite magazine. Does he play golf? Some new golf balls, or a new golf club. Is he a fisherman? Some lures or other fishing supplies. Does he hunt? A box of shotgun shells. Does he like movies? A gift certificate to Blockbuster. Where does he like to eat? A gift certificate can be purchased at most restaurants and fast food places. Invite him over for a home cooked meal. Spend some time with him doing something you both enjoy. Give him a hug and kiss and tell him "Happy birthday, Dad. I love you."

I have had the same problem with my dad in the past.
Here's what I've done;
something edible-dad likes nuts and cheese and that kind of thing, so that's a good gift
plus I like to do something charitable. I have adopted a whale in his name, I have bought an acre of rain forest...stuff like that. He gets a certificate and a photo and he thinks it's neat and I get a tax receipt.
Lots of charities have similar programs.

How about having a suprise party with all his friends and family! Or if you have more brothers and sisters you all can chip in and send him and your mother somewhere! My fathers 50th is coming up to and he wants to go on a cruise. Hope that helps!

I once went out and bought a bunch of random things that reminded me of my childhood with my dad. A Statler Brother's CD, a snap-button western plaid shirt, a Wrangler pant label... and put them in an album with some pics of us together when I was little. It really meant a lot to him.

For my parents 40th anniversary my siblings and I got them two sets of bottles from Jonessoda. You can buy a set of 12 glass bottles of their soda with special pictures on the labels. I took a recent picture of them and put them on one set and one of their wedding pictures on another. Just an oddball cool idea. Especially if he has a special picture he likes.
