There is no excuse for bullying at work. Non-performance should be handled professionally and in line with company policies using acceptable people management skills. Bullying is unfair and in fact is often also a criminal action too. So, if you are being bullied at work for whatever reason use your company's grievance procedure and get that person stopped!

Some people consider personal counseling for nonperformance as bullying by the boss. In fact, it is the opposite. (S)he merely wants to make you aware of your deficiencies and help develop options on how to correct them and improve your productivity.

If the issue is not non-performance and the boss is bullying you then there may be a case for "hostile work environment". Document the incident (time, place, what was said, witnesses, etc.), then arrange an appointment with his/her boss to inform him/her of the situation. Document the meeting and if nothing changes within a reasonable amount of time, then file a complaint with the appropriate State (Human Rights Division) or Federal (Labor Dept., Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) agency.

The same procedure should be followed in the event the perpetrator is a co-worker, except that the initial interview should be with the perp's supervisor.

Don't put up with it, you sound very young and that may be the reason that you are in the firing line. If it's your management that is bullying you seek advice from the CAB as to what your rights are. A firm I worked for was taken over by a larger company that was run very much on fear i.e bullying and intimidation by so called managers. Unfortunately for them I don't like bullies and they were soon told in no uncertain terms that I wouldn't tolerate it either directed at me or my staff! The only thing they could do was sack me and they would have had to have had a good reason because I would have sued them for every penny.

From the look of Girlboy's "about me" it's small wonder he gets yelled at. He and his spineless boss both deserve the boot so that someone who really needs a job and is willing to do a decent day's work can take over - no need for bullying then.

There is plenty of nonsense about performance but the the best way is to start playing their game;I mean start bulling the other person. If you are not that kind of person the only thing that I can say you is never Cry or get Upset in front of these people.never give them that pleasure.
Things can only get better

actually ,i notice you have asked three questions on the same subject so I hope YOU aren't the one being bullied. If you are then don't stand for it ,even if its the boss.that's doing the bullying. In this day and age there is always someone you can go to e.g. Citizens advice bureau, industrial tribunal, the papers . Go for it

Yes and yes. The outcome was I was demoted. Eventually, though, I found another job paying much more money!
