While it is flowing, it is a fiery reddish orange that burns everything in its path. Once it cools, it is black.

Lava is molten metal and rock from inside the earth. It starts out glowing red. When it comes in contact with the air the iron ores, copper ore, other metals react to form different metal oxides. This is because when metal is in a liquid form it is very reactive with other elements. This oxides layer is darkish red brown crust that starts to form on the surface of the lava. There is also the ash factor. Most of the ash that is associated with a volcanic eruption, and a lava flow is is dirty gray color. This all mix together to form the color of lava.
