It can be an adverb or a preposition or a subordinate conjunction depending on its function in the sentence.

ADVERB: They went to movies, and then after, they went to the mall. Modifies went.

PREPOSITION: Joan was asked to stay after school for extra help. Begins the prepositional phrase after school.

Subordinate conjunction: After the ball was over, the Rotary Club served the kids breakfast. Begins the adverb clause "after the ball was over."

I hope this helps.
