I think so in theory, but in practice I think he might need a Change of Name Deed. These are cheap as chips anyway (maximum about £50) and SO easy to do. As I say, in theory he wouldn't need one, but in practice, banks, passport agency etc, he probably would. There's no obligation to enrol the Deed at the Supreme Court though, and a person can use any name they like as long as it's not with the intention to defraud. He might want to try just changing it on his marriage as if a woman can change hers by virtue of the marriage then if a man can't, surely that's sexist??

I think they would have to change their name by deed poll yes. You can do it for £10 on the Internet, I did.

What is wrong with the system that is already in place which everyone understands? Why do you want to be radical over such a mundane thing. If you want to be radical do something outragious like making love to a complete stranger without a condom. Not that is foolhardy but radical.

No he can only use his real name on documents as fraud is committed so he would need to change it legally by deed poll.

Like Tucsie says, in the UK, anyone can simply 'change' their name but you can expect a few 'administrative' problems if you don't inform people like the Inland Revenue. (In France it's much more difficult - even if your name is slightly embarassing).

Anybody can take any name they like as long as it's genuine and not for fraud. It's the name that everyone knows you by.
