How much to they get paid? is is a really good job?

it depends is the answer to both questions here.

If they are just doing something routine that involves coding for a clerical operation they don't get much. If they are doing embedded programming for microprocessors in an application that is not time-critical and in which the activities are routine but real time they will get a nice wage. If however they are doing an embedded program for a newly designed high speed microprocessor on a program that is time critical such as intercepting messages and processing them in real time the wages go up spectacularly. I can't give numbers since they depend on localities, company size, project funding, and the job market at the time.

It is a challenging job when you are involved with designing and debugging both the physical interfaces and the code. However it is usually time consuming involving a lot of overtime effort (probably unpaid) meeting tight deadlines and frantically trying to get answers on questions no one has ever raised before about how hardware and software works together in a new set of functions.
