This is going on in Tennessee while I live in kansas? My husband filed for divorce and I no longer have representation. $$ Anyway, we agreed to settle but I was told it will still have to go to court to be decreed? And that I would not have to be there? How do I know his attorney is not just trying to screw me? I have had several people tell me yes I have to be there and no I don't. I do not know who else to call? I don't want to hurt my side by not showing up. And They still have not even told me when a date is? What do I do? I do not want to lose custody of my daughter, he already has my youngest . and I agreed to do joint. I am freaked! What do I do, who can I call to make sure my husband and his attorney are not trying to screw me?

I work in a Family Law Office-

You need to contact an attorney in TN if that's where the court proceedings are taking place. I also believe that his attorney is probably required to send you some type of written notice of the court appearance. Normally this type of paperwork would be sent to your attorney, but if you're pro se (meaning without an attorney) they should be sending it to you directly. Call his attorney and request a copy of the Notice that is requiring your appearance. This may be called a Notice of Final Orders, unsure what they call it there...

Your really need to call an attorney in TN. Try findlaw.com or martindale hubbell online to locate a family law attorney in TN.

Also, call the Bar Association in the TN county where this is taking place, they may have pro bono attorneys (ones who work for free) that they can recommend to you. I would also call the TN court and ask how to obtain a copy of the court file so you can see what papers have been filed, since you are a party to them you should be able to gain access to them. Sometimes you can access these records online, other times you have to go to a court house to request them. Be aware this may take some time and persistence and they will of course charge you fees- sometimes for retrieval, other times just for the copies. You also may have to copy them yourself in person.

I would check with the court house where the divorce case was filed. I recommend when the final papers arrive to review them immediately for inaccuracies because there is a limited amount of time before the appeals process can be filed. Be sure to attend the court date, or he will get anything he wants in the divorce decree. It does happen!

If there are children involved, you are going to have to show up, or he's going to be awarded custody hun. I wish there was another way, but there's not. You should be served papers in regards to the divorce and you must receive them 72 hours prior to the actual court date. If you want to plan ahead, call the court house for the county he lives in to see when the hearing is. I wish you the best of luck.

Call the court house where the divorce is being handled. They can tell you if you have an upcomming court date. If you both signed the joint divorce paperwork then no you dont need to be in court. However if you have not signed any paper work I would go to court.

Call the court house there and ask them all these questions. I'm sure they know when it is scheduled and if you have to show up or not.

If you know when the court date is set for I would show up. You never know if your ex will change his mind on anything and he could win by default.

If I was you i would find a lawyer that i could make payments to, or one that would not charge you to just talk to him and ask him these questions! All i know is if it came down to loosing my children, cause i did not have the money for a lawyer, then i would feel terriable, i would get some help some how. I know in Oklahoma therer are lawyers that let you make payments, I would check into it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
